Looking for that really small town that is largely unchanged?
The town was originally named Marcelina when it was established in 1886 as a switch on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass railway, but renamed in 1901 for A. H. Poth, who owned a cotton processing business. Marcelina is another community in Wilson County. The town itself only encompasses about 4 miles in area. Many people new to the area will pronounce it Paoth sort of like path but with an o thrown in but it is POTH with a long O like both. The City of Poth, Texas is located approximately 35 miles south-southeast of San Antonio on US Highway 181. It is about 6 miles southeast of Floresville
It took a few years for businesses to get going, but in 1900 the first store opened and the following year a cotton gin was built by A.H. Poth. The name was then charged to Poth and a depot was built in 1906.
By 1914 the population was 250 and the town had most essential businesses including a lumberyard and furniture store. By 1920 it had increased to 300 residents. After WWII the population had doubled to 600 and by the mid-1960s it had reached 1,119. As of 2019 it was 2,284 so you can see it is still quite a small town. But it is within 50 miles of San Antonio so that is a short drive to get to the “big city.” The Texas State Handbook has a small amount of history at https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/poth-tx.
Although businesses have declined from 35 in 1965 to 13 in 1990, the population has continued to increase – a rarity for small town Texas.
The community is a town that really supports its school and athletic teams. That school spirit is really evident. The city hosts an annual bike ride which benefits the Alzheimer’s Association San Antonio Chapter and the City of Poth parks funds. The date for 2022 is April 23rd with four rider levels (12 mile, 22 mile, 44 mile and 66 mile) and a 5K Run/Walk. Half the proceeds will be donated to help fight Alzheimer’s disease and half put towards the Poth City Park.
The school itself has an excellent rating and small class sizes. The athletic teams do well every year to the pride of the town.
